Faculty Research Opportunities Committee


Rationale

 

The Committee on Faculty Research Opportunities will enable the Faculty of Education to respond to prospects for research chair appointments, foundation support and other Faculty research opportunities through fair and open selection. This selection process applies to occasions where the University is requesting the Faculty to nominate candidate(s) in priority that will be submitted for University wide competition at SFU or with other provincial or national competitions.

 

Functions

 

1.     To gather, catalog and adjudicate proposals from Faculty members for recommendation to the Dean and the University for which financial and other kinds of support will be sought. These terms of reference include, but are not limited to, proposals for:

a.     special appointments (e.g., externally-funded visiting scholars or research chairs),

b.     nominations of candidates for special appointments, outlines for allocating or committing fiscal and infrastructure resources in the service of special appointments, or

c.     other research opportunities, and terms of reference for collaborative structures for research (e.g., centres, laboratories, institutes) involving colleagues within and external to SFU, agencies, and/or institutions.

2.     To solicit from faculty members proposals for new research opportunities as announcements become known and as deadlines permit.

3.     Solicit new proposals relevant to research opportunities and to recommend to the Dean a response regarding a research opportunity.

4.     To report each semester or as required on the Committee’s activities.

 

Composition

 

1.     The Dean (Chair).

2.     The Faculty of Education Research Coordinator.

3.     Three members elected by and from the Faculty and one alternate member if there is any conflict of interest regarding the Committee’s adjudication of a research proposal competition.

 

Term of Office

 

1.     The term of the appointment of the Dean.

2.     The term of appointment for the Research Coordinator.

3.     Terms of office for elected tenure Faculty shall be two years and membership will normally begin on August 1st.
