Neuroscience: a brief view of mirror neurons
November issue of Scientific American has a Special Section article about mirror neurons, a group of neural mechanisms which appear to encode templates for specific actions, both personal and observed.
"Mirrors of the Mind," by Giacomo Rizzolatti, Leonardo Fogassi, and Vitorio Gallese, in Scientific American, pp. 54-61. These "mirror neurons" provide direct internal experience of actions, and thereby prompt understanding of another person's behaviour, intention, or emotion.
